The Historical Dockyards of Pisa CD-ROM.

This CD-ROM shows and tells the story of Pisa through the centuries, from ancient times, through the middle ages and right up to the present day. This is the story of a town whose past, present and future are intimately bound up with the destiny of the Mediterranean Sea. The CD is articulated in different multimedia paths, as an outcome of “la Navigation du Savoir” project, financed by the European Commission in the frame of Euromed Heritage II programme. It brings with it the discovery of the ancient ships of San Rossore, tells the adventures of the Knights of Saint Stephen sailing through the Mediterranean sea, leads us into the Medici’s dockyards, giving us the opportunity to appreciate ancient trades and traditions buried under the oblivion of the centuries; and much more….

This CD-ROM is the result of a common effort of CPR and the Municipality of Pisa. Since the ancient ships were discovered, Pisa met new challenges and opportunities. The process, started in 1998, brought to a new consciousness about the centrality of Pisa in the Mediterranean history along with the will to catch this occasion to tie links with other Mediterranean countries and partners.

The collaboration with “Navigation du Savoir” partners led to this product, a first “compendium” of the story of Pisa and a different and easy way to learn much more about it. The CD-ROM presents a new, improved set of contents from Pisa’s portal, integrated with some hard-to-download new material, such as interesting panoramic views of the Renaissance dockyards of Pisa.

The CD-ROM will be a precious tool to teach Pisa and Mediterranean story to children of local primary schools through a non-didactic approach, as already proposed.

As a further effect, the CD-ROM inspired information, ideas and didactic materials for children’s groups visiting the archaeological excavation of San Rossore.

This CD-ROM will be available only at the Municipality of Pisa.
